Generals' Nicknames
No.124: 'Rajah' Paget
Dr Andy Simpson has discovered in the diary of Lieutenant-General Sir J.A.L. Haldane a reference to the BGRA VI Corps, Brigadier-General Wellesley Lynedoch Henry Paget (1858-1918), as ‘Rajah’ Paget. There is nothing obvious in Paget’s CV to account for the nickname.

The meeting referred to in Haldane’s diary was brief. Haldane advised Paget to go home sick before the GOC Third Army, General Sir Edmund Allenby, sacked him. Paget took the advice, leaving his command on 9 August 1916. He had survived an attempt by Haldane’s predecessor, Sir John Keir, to have him replaced in February 1916. Keir was also sacked by Allenby!
