Obituary
Sir John Paget, Bt., K.C., who died in his sleep at Burnham, Buckinghamshire, on Saturday, at the age of 90. was a lawyer well known in his day as a specialist in banking law and the author of several works dealing with that subject. John Rahere Paget, the eldest son of Sir James Paget, first baronet, the famous surgeon, was born on March 9, 1848. His second name, "Rahere," was that of the founder, in 1123, of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, where his father, James Paget, received his medical training. One of his brothers. Francis. who died in 1911, was Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford; another was Henry Luke, Bishop of Chester from 1919 to 1932, who died last year; and a third was Stephen, the surgeon and author, the implacable foe of the anti-vivisectionists and the founder of the Research Defence Society, who died in 1926. John was educated privately and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, of which he was a Scholar and Law Student and where he graduated, in 1870, with a second class in the Classical and in the Law Tripos. and took his LL.B. He won the Burney University Essay Prize in 1871. Two years later he was called the Bar by the Inner Temple, of which Inn he was afterwards made a Bencher. His practice was perhaps more in Chambers than in Court. He earned a reputation as an authority upon the law of banking, and he was at one time standing advising counsel to the Institute of Bankers. In 1899 he succeeded his father as second baronet, and in 1902 took silk, after which his appearances in Court were rare. His "Law of Banking" has gone through several editions; and his "Legal Decisions Affecting Bankers" was in its day a useful book of reference. He was also the author of the article on banks and banking in Lord Halsbury's "Laws of England." John Paget had the agreeable manners of his family, and was much respected by his fellow-practitioners at the Bar, by whom he was often consulted upon his special subject and it whose disposal he always willingly placed his wide knowledge. He was a member of the County of London Appeal Tribunal in 1916, and assisted the Ministry of National Service in the delicate and important duty of recruiting in the Government departments. In 1883 he married Julia, daughter of George Moke, of New York. She died in 1926. He left two sons and two daughters, and is succeeded in the baronetcy by his elder son, Commander James Francis Paget, R.N.(retired, who was born on September 25, 1890. The new baronet's twin brother, Major George Norrie Paget, now becomes heir-presumptive to the baronetcy.
