The Victorian Church: Architecture and Society - By Chris Brooks
There were two obstacles which Henry and Joseph Goddard needed to overcome if they were to secure ecclesiastical commissions in the city. One was their Anglicanism. This very likely affected progress in many spheres, not just nonconformist church-building, and to address this, Joseph took into partnership in 1873 A. H. Paget, a member of a leading local Unitarian family and a member of Leicester's Great Meeting. Paget also brought with him a wealth of relevant experience; a period working with Cubitt held him in good stead when the practice won the competition for the single biggest nonconformist church in Leicester, the Melbourne Hall (1880-01), which resembles and was evidently inspired by James Cubitt's Union Chapel. Islington.

Alfred Henry Paget was married in Leicester in 1876, September Quarter - Jane Helen Clephan (born 1851, September Quarter, Leicester) Jane was the daughter of Edwin Clepham, born 29 May 1817 and died 23 December 1906 - Edwin was a member of the same church as Alfred Henry.
