Colonel George James Dalrymple-Hay, of the Bengal Staff Corps, whose death at Poonah, in his 51st year, has just been announced, was the eldest son of the late Sir James Dalrymple-Hay, of Park-place, Wigtownshire. He entered the military service of the East India Company on their Bengal establishment as an ensign in 1847, and was posted to the 57th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry (locally known as "Lord Moirs-Ka-Pultun") on the 12th February, 1848. His regiment arrived in Lahore in 1850, and he was promoted to lieutenancy on the 4th November, 1852. Having passed a district examination in the Persian and Hindustani languages, he was soon after selected for staff employment and appointed adjutant of the 18th Irregular Cavalry on the 10th February, 1854. This corps arrived at Peshawur in December, 1855, and was stationed there at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny in 1857. He was promoted to be second in command of the 18th Irregular Cavalry on the 27th October, 1858, and attained the rank of captain on the 21st November of the same year. In 1861 he joined the Bengal Staff Corps, and on the 7th March, 1862, he was appointed to the Pay Department as Paymaster at Rawul Pindi, in the Punjab, for the Trans-Ravee Circle, and was promoted to the rank of major in the Staff Corps on the 20th March, 1867. On the 20th March, 1873, he was duly promoted to the grade of lieutenant-colonel, and, on the 1st April, 1876, he was classified as a military accountant of the second class, first grade, in the department of military accounts. He was gazetted a brevet-colonel in the Army on the 20th January, 1878, and, on the ensuing 14th of June he was promoted to be a military accountant of the first class, second grade, receiving the appointment of Examiner of Commissariat and Stud Accounts in the department. The late Colonel Dalrymple-Hay married, in 1855, Emily, daughter of Colonel Frederick Maitland, of the Bengal Army.
