bullet  General Notes:

In the 1881 Census John Prettejohn is still at home in Muckwell.

John was a master butcher, then publican /barman

John went to Australia between 1881 and 1891, where he married Charlotte Cecilia Carter, and had one son Charles Lawrence Pitts.

By 1897 he was back in England, living at 39 Tavistock Crescent. By 1901 he was at Bankside, London, where he was a publican, with two sons, and wife. At his death in 1910 he was a Barman of 25 Mansion Street - his work address? Charlotte is informant of his death, and her address is given as 40 Earls Court Road West Kensington.

At the time of their marriage John was a merchant of Newtown, Sydney, and Cecilia was a Domestic Servant, of Croydon, NSW. They were married in a congregational church. Three years later John is described on Charles' birth Certificate as a Butcher.

John died of pulmonary Tuberculosis exhaustion

Great uncle John Prettejohn Pitts b. 1864 went to Australia some time during the 1880s. In 1891 he married Charlotte Cecilia Carter b. 1868 in Dundalk, the daughter of a soldier. Charlotte had travelled around quite a bit in her eighteen years when she sailed to Sydney from Plymouth on the SS Belgic that left Plymouth on 8th September and arrived in Sydney 25 October 1885. Nonetheless her spirit must have been typical of that of thousands who sailed to their new lives. She was an 18 year-old housemaid, and it must have been a daunting experience to make that 6 week journey apparently unaccompanied. John was a butcher in Sydney. Their first child was born there, but something about the life didn't suit and by 1897 they were back in London, where John died three years later.
