At the 1861 Census William was learning farming.
The 1871 Census reported that William was farming 116 acres near Stokenham.
By the time of the 1881 Census William was farming at Muckwell and was described as a farmer with 120 acres employing 2 men and 2 boys.
Jane Ann Horton's brother Samuel was farming at Start, Stokenham in 1881, and Jane was living with him and his family.
In the 1891 Census he was reported as William S. Pitts at Muckwell. He was living with his second wife Jane Annie and two of their children, Annie Elizabeth and Nicholas Samuel.
The three daughters were all unmarried and living at at Muckwell farm in 1901.
After the death of William in 1898 Mrs Jane Ann was still at Muckwell according to Kellys 1902 Directory, but by 1906 it was being farmed by William Henry Widger.
In 1901 after William's death, William Edmund Partridge, 41, born in Woolfardisworthy, was farm manager, living at Muckwell. Is this a connection that resulted in Ann and husband living at Woolfardisworthy? Though the farmer next door is James Partridge.
In 1902 Partridge married Kate Pitts, William's daughter.
William married Ann Elizabeth Cole Loye, daughter of James Loye and Elizabeth Cole, in May 1864.
